The US Department of Labor reports that over 60% of today’s jobs require some form of technology use. There is no doubt that the students graduating from my campus will be using technology in one form or another in their lives. One observation I have made over the past few years is that students feel very comfortable with computers, yet they have a very narrow set of computer skills they are comfortable with. For example, students can use email and instant messaging (IM), but I have been surprised at how many students I have had to show how to insert page numbers in MS Word, or copy and paste a graph from MS Excel to MS Word. I feel it is extremely important for students to learn how to use technology to enhance their learning, save time researching, and prepare professional-looking reports.
When I meet with industry professionals to discuss our curriculum, the one item that is repeated each year is the need for students to not only use technology but to better understand how to use social media. Therefore, I am working hard to develop lessons and assignments that will help my students develop those skills and the ability to learn new skills in order for the students to have success in their future career.
I am curious. I would love to learn what others are doing to integrate technology and social media in your courses. Students are welcome to share those lessons or activities that your courses have utilized that you found most helpful.
